THEM shares mesmerizing Can't 001

A mesmerizing track titled Can’t 001 being released today with THEM. The catchy melody and thumping basslines make for a thrilling listening experience – The use of distinctive synths and percussion in the song adds a unique edge to it, making it stand out from the crowd even if the groove is very recognizable.

After speaking with him, i would say the track reflects the producer’s creativity and skill and kind of fits as a testament to the thriving electronic scene in Denmark where he participates in both live shows and collaborations. Talking to him on the phone gave me inspiration to ask some questions on why he is switching lanes to other genres.

Your signature style has been known for producing laidback beats with a mellow type R&B feel. What inspired you to explore the electronic genre, specifically the “UK Garage” style, for your new single “Can’t 001”?

I believe that one’s music taste, both in producing and listening, develops similarly to one’s clothing style or taste in food. I’ve always been a big fan of uptempo and club music since I was very young, and the more ‘chill’ music I made, the more I wanted to break out of those confines. The entire UK genre is quite the opposite of where I come from; everything (except for triplet swing 2-step drums) is very rigid, on-grid, and minimalist with much less harmonic content than, for example, Neosoul chords.

Your previous works have been characterized by a contemporary feel. How do you balance staying current in the music scene while also maintaining your distinctive sound, especially when exploring new genres?

There is a lot of music in various genres that inspires me. I almost create music in a new genre every month, and I believe that it helps one to evolve as an artist—to explore new areas, understand how different genres are produced, and delve into the culture and history behind why specific sounds are associated with a particular time and genre.
I think it’s healthy to try new things and not get stuck in the same sound.

As a producer, you’ve built a reputation for creating atmospheres that resonate with your audience. How do you approach crafting an emotional connection through your music, and how has this evolved with your recent exploration into electronic styles? 

Even within chill beats, I’ve been very fond of creating atmospheric and melancholic music, and I find it even more exciting within the more uptempo and electronic universe. I love the idea of being able to cry on the dance floor—being melancholic and depressed in a euphoric way.

Can’t 001 has a distinct vibe. Can you share some of the influences that played a role in shaping this track, both within and outside the music industry?

Many UK-based artists, of course. My approach was to create a very minimalist track with a repeating vocal phrase and a lot of modular IDM-inspired noise and glitch sounds. The song is also written during a relatively depressive time, alone away from my usual surroundings and friends, which undoubtedly plays a significant role in the expression of the track.

Moving into the electronic realm, do you envision this as a one-time experiment, or can we expect more diversification in your future projects? How has this exploration influenced your perspective on your own musical journey?

I believe it’s the opposite. Right now, I find this direction in music extremely interesting to explore, and I plan to stay in this path for a long period.
