Philanthrope & bert cussion - Backflip
A new single collaboration between Philanthrope and bert cussion titled backflip including exclusive video footage from bert cussion
The first release of 2026 under the Ninetofive® catalogue. This year, our focus is on giving space to music where producers feel free to create without rules or boundaries - guided by inspiration and an experimental mindset.
In-house member Philanthrope links up with bert cussion on “Backflip”, a calm, smooth-vibe single that sets the tone for our start this year.
We’re both happy to welcome bert cussion to Ninetofive® for his first release with us. Based in Innsbruck, Austria, he brings a personal catalogue rooted in a classic lo-fi touch and approach to his beats - a style that’s iconic in its own right and built a strong following all over the world.
It’s exciting to hear that sound blend with Philanthrope’s deeper sound, creating a space where you instantly recognize his signature in the production.
Guitar is a clear style and approach of bert cussion’s sound. Looking back at previous tracks and collaborations, it’s something that consistently stands out - pulling the listener in as he blends crisp lo-fi textures with soulful guitar notes layered with reverb.
bert cussion started playing drums at the age of six and has been playing in bands since he was twelve. Around the same time, he discovered a passion for freestyle snowboarding. Since then, he has been combining these two worlds.
“When snowboarding, I value the playful interaction with nature and moving freely within it. Music is also a place where I can easily lose myself and reach a similar state.”
For me, music means being able to perceive emotions, recall moods, indulge in uninhibited imagination, and physically feel sound waves. Making music therefore becomes a way of sharing inner states while at the same time appreciating one’s own emotions.
He is a self-taught guitar player, with the focus set on expressing emotion rather than impressing with technical skill. bert cussion distances himself from perfectionism. He does not seek flawless performance, but rather the honesty of the moment and its aesthetics - almost an affront to the state of contemporary popular music, which at times exhausts itself in a kind of AI-produced triviality.
“I started producing 3 years ago. Birdhouse Beats and the Mellow Mountain beatcamp crew motivated me to do so. Philanthrope tried apr. 10 years ago - but without success, haha most things i learned from Claptu and Beatmund Noice” - Inspired a lot by Philanthrope and his production friends “(always went do his DJ gigs and loved it - back in the days in Innsbruck)”
Like we said before, this already feels like the beginning of a long-term collaboration.
